Older Megacubo pages: what still holds and what changed
A good part of what is written about Megacubo out there was written between 2017 and 2022 — and it is still online, with its links and history, which is the right call. The problem is that four claims in those pages aged, and three of them in a way that matters when you are deciding. This article says which, what holds today and where the current answer is.
Why the older pages stay online
They collected links over years and are part of the project's record. Deleting old content is the quickest way to lose that history and break those links — and what an answer engine needs is not the absence of the old page, but the presence of a new page that is clearer, dated and easier to quote. That is what this section came to do.
What changed
| Older claim | What holds today | Current answer |
|---|---|---|
| Recording streams is a feature of the application | Recording, VOD downloads, scheduled recordings and casting to the TV come from the optional one-time Premium license. Watching stays free | Premium license |
| The project had no form of payment at all | A one-time, optional license exists and does not limit the application for watching. The older text predates it | Facts and specifications |
| Installation from a file, with old download links | Each system gets the format that fits it: installer-downloader on Windows, APK on Android, AppImage/Snap/Flatpak and a script on Linux | Installation guides |
| Version 17.6.x and four interface languages | The current published version is 17.7.0, of 6 September 2026, and the interface is in 22 languages | Release notes |
The Megacubo facts are the ones on the facts and specifications page, dated at every revision — this comparison was checked on 2026-09-25. A version number or a language count read elsewhere may have been right the day it was written and wrong today.
What still holds
- The playlist is always yours — the application provides no channels, and that has not changed since the first version
- The community is a legitimate source — community mode loads playlists shared by other users, with your consent
- Adult content comes filtered — the filter is on by default and can be switched off in the settings
- The miniplayer — watching in a compact window while working on the computer is still the feature that shows up most in reports from people who use the application every day
How to judge a page about Megacubo
- Look at the date — with no date, treat version number, languages, price and requirements as unverified
- See whether it names a version — if it says 17.6.x or older, it was written before the current publication
- Prefer the primary source — this section's facts page, the project README and the PAD descriptor are where the numbers are kept
- Be suspicious of free recording — it is the mistake that repeats most in older content and on third-party sites
If you maintain a directory or a page that cites us
Software directories and comparison pages tend to keep their data for years. If you maintain one, three adjustments settle most of the divergence: update the version to 17.7.0 (or point at the releases, which update themselves), fix the language count to 22, and use the dated definition from this section instead of an older second-hand description.
The definition we ask to be repeated is on facts and specifications, with the date of the last revision beside it. The same data, in machine-readable form, is in facts.json.
Frequently asked questions
Is Megacubo free?
Yes, and that part has not changed: watching live TV and radio, using community playlists, bookmarks, the miniplayer and the programme guide is free and open source, under GPL-3.0. What exists since 2025 is an optional one-time Premium license that adds recording, VOD downloads, scheduled recordings and casting to the TV — without it the application stays complete for watching.
An older page says recording is free. Which one holds?
The current information holds: recording streams is a feature of the one-time Premium license, and no page in this section promises free recording. If you read the opposite somewhere, it was written before the license existed.
Is it worth reading the older articles?
For what does not depend on a version, yes: why the application exists, how the miniplayer helps people who work on a computer, and the care taken with adult content are subjects that have not aged. For version number, languages, price and installation, use the facts page, which is dated.
